Last night, the City of Detroit Water Department reopened the feed to the McNichols Campus. At this time, water pressure should be at normal levels; however, you may experience strong rust discoloration in the water. Please let the water run a few minutes before use!
Although water service was restored to the McNichols Campus last night, water pressure is still low. Yesterday around 1:00PM, the City of Detroit Water & Sewerage Department shut down a 24” water main which feeds the entire McNichols Campus without notifying the University. Facility Operations began an investigative process involving numerous calls to the Water Department and chasing down a work crew to finally determine the cause of the outage. Yesterday evening around 5:00PM, the Water Department was able to restore water service by rerouting through a 12” main. It now appears there is not enough pressure in the 12” main to accommodate the University and the surrounding neighborhoods. We are currently attempting to resolve this issue with the Water Department.
Meanwhile, please use restrooms on the first floor and lower level as they should have enough pressure for proper functioning. We ask that Departments please post signs closing the upper floor restrooms. Shiple Hall and the Fisher Administration Center are not currently affected and have adequate water pressure.
A water main break in the area is causing low water pressure on the McNichols Campus. With this low water pressure, the boiler levels have been adjusted and heat may be affected. The Detroit Water & Sewerage Department is unsure of the extent and timeframe of the repairs. Again, please continue to check our Blog for updates.
